Bret Hughes is the Principle Percussionist for the Utah Wind Symphony in Salt Lake City, UT.  The Utah Wind Symphony is a professional wind band under the direction of Scott Hagen, and will perform at the 2014 Midwest Clinic.  This group has performed the highest quality works for Wind Band including compositions by Holst, Mackey, Sparke, Whitacre, Chance, and Hesketh.  The group is a commissioning group that has been involved in commissions from Alex Weston, and was also part of the commissioning consortium and played the Western United States Premier for David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 9. 

In addition, Bret is the Director of Percussion for the Park City School District in Park City, UT.  The PCHS Advanced Percussion Studio will perform at the Music for All Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival in March of 2015 as one of eight invited high school percussion ensembles.  In addition, they will perform this Spring at the Utah School Boards Association Annual Conference and the Utah Music Educators Association Mid-Winter Conference.  They will also present a clinic and showcase performance at the 2015 Utah Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion (UT-PAS DOP).

In April of 2014, The Advanced Percussion Studio from the PCHS Percussion Program was selected to be a featured group at the National School Board Association’s (NSBA) Annual Conference.  They performed during the general session in front of 6,000 conference attendees, and in an exhibition performance sponsored by the NAMM Corporation in the Exhibit Hall.

Previous accolades for the Park City High School Percussion Studio include a 2014 State Championship in both the Large Ensemble and Chamber Ensemble competitions at the 2014 UT-PAS DOP, being the highest scoring instrumental ensemble at the San Francisco 2014, Boston 2013, New York City 2011 and Washington DC 2009 Heritage WorldStrides Performance Festival, annual Superior ratings at the State Solo/Ensemble Festival, and six top three finishes at previous UT PAS Day of Percussion Festivals.

Bret holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education from the University of Wyoming (2008) where he studied with Dr. Stephen Barnhart and Dr. John Lane.  Additionally, Bret is an active member of the Local and National Organizations of PAS and NAfME, and he serves as the Treasurer and Day of Percussion Festival Coordinator for the Utah Chapter of PAS.
