 Emily Tannert is the assistant director of bands at Rouse High Schooll. She was
previously the front ensemble instructor and assistant percussion director at Leander High
School in 2010-2011, and at 2009 Texas 4A State Finalists and 2010 PAS Percussion
Ensemble Competition winners Legacy High School in 2009-2010. Tannert has also
served as the front ensemble instructor for the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps; Ronald
Reagan HS, San Antonio, TX ; Westlake HS, Austin, TX; and numerous other marching
bands and indoor drumlines in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee.
Tannert holds a Master's degree in Percussion Performance from The University of Texas
at Austin, where she studied with Thomas Burritt and Tony Edwards. Tannert earned her
Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Studies, along with an undergraduate
Performance Certificate in Percussion and her Texas teaching certificate, from UT in
2008, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Political Science from
Northwestern University in 2004.
While at UT, Tannert performed at a number of festivals and conferences with the UT
Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble, including the 2006
Percussive Arts Society International Conference in Austin, TX; the 2009 Texas Music
Educators Association Conference in San Antonio, TX; and several European wind band
festivals as part of the UT Wind Ensemble’s 2008 European Tour. She also
commissioned and premiered three new solo pieces at her Master’s recital in April 2010.
Tannert aged out of Drum Corps International with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps
in 2003 and was a member of the 2004 Winter Guard International world champion
indoor drumline Music City Mystique. She has worked as a percussion judge for the
Texas Color Guard Circuit since 2011.
Tannert is an educational endorser for Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets and holds
professional memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, the National
Association for Music Education (MENC), and the Percussive Arts Society.
