Paul OrmandyLion King, The Producers, Lord of the Rings, Canadian premiere productions
Paul Ormandy's keen interest in contemporary, popular and global musics has led him on a journey of performance and education throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Japan. His experience spans a broad variety of settings ranging from Broadway show to symphony and opera orchestras, Afro-Cuban music to steelband, flamenco and world drumming festivals to corporate communication workshops.
Internationally Paul’s musical experience has included membership in the Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad), Heartbeat Ensemble - Expo 2000 (Germany), Musaïc - Expo 1998 (Portugal), and Mika Yoshida’s Marimbop (Japan).
Paul has also served as a full-time orchestra member in the Toronto production of the Disney musical The Lion King and Mel Brooks’ musical The Producers. He has most recently completed performing with the orchestra and on-stage as a cast member in Toronto's world premiere run of The Lord of the Rings theatrical production.
Some of his past and present Canadian ensemble credits include, Candela Flamenca: The Passion of Spanish Flamenco Music and Dance, Ilédè Afro-Cuban Music and Dance Ensemble, Kekeli Ghanaian Drumming and Dance Ensemble, the Afropan Steelband, the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, and The Canadian Opera Company Orchestra.
He has also appeared on numerous television programs (on and off-screen), radio programs, and commercial CD releases.
As an educator, Paul is a Course Director of Cuban Music at York University, Visiting Artist in Percussion at the Etobicoke School of the Arts and has previously served on faculty at the University of Toronto and The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. As a corporate educator Paul draws on his diverse musical knowledge to introduce the corporate world to the experience of communication through non-verbal means as a facilitator and performer with Boom! The Power of Rhythm.
An avid woodworker, Paul is also currently exploring percussion instrument design and construction. His revolutionary 'External Tuning Mechanism' Spanish-style cajón is now produced and sold world-wide by Mountain Rythym handcrafted percussion instruments.
