A native of Metro Detroit, Michigan, Nathan began studying percussion at the age of nine. He holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from Central Michigan University where he studied with Dr. Andrew Spencer and Brian Jones (DSO Principal Timpanist) and a Master of Music Performance from The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where he studied with Ed Harrison (Lyric Opera of Chicago Principal Timpanist) and Vadim Karpinos (Chicago Symphony Orchestra Assistant Principal Timpanist/Percussionist).
Nathan was a percussion fellow at The Chautauqua Institute Summer Festival School for two summers under the direction of Michael Burritt. He was also a percussion fellow at The Hot Springs Music Festival. Nathan performed as section percussionist in the Carmel Symphony. He was a marching member of Redline Indoor Percussion, The Lakeshoremen Senior Drum Corps and the Chicago Bulls Drumline on snare drum. After graduate school, Nathan became the Director of Percussion at Lawrence North High School and Fall Creek Valley Middle School, where he founded a district wide state champion indoor winter percussion ensemble and WGI national finalist. Nathan is focused on taking his orchestral percussion background and his marching percussion experience to create and inspire students to become well rounded percussionists and people.
Nathan is in his fourth year as Assistant Director of Bands/Percussion Specialist at Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, Missouri. This position has Nathan teaching percussion grades 6-12 as he works with students from Brittany Hill Middle School, Paul Kinder Middle School, Blue Springs High School, and the Blue Springs High School Freshman Campus.
In Nathan’s spare time, he enjoys gardening with native plants, cycling, handyman projects, and spoiling his adopted pups.
