Multi-percussionist, arranger and composer Carlos "Carly" Maldonado was born and raised in Carolina, Puerto Rico. A talented young musician, Carlos stands out brilliantly in the music world as a hand percussionist & vibraphonist. Mr. Maldonado received his B.M. in Symphonic Percussion from the Puerto Rico Music Conservatory where he studied with professor Jose Alicea and his M.A. in Jazz Arranging & Performance from The Aaron Copland School of Music in New York where he studied with professor Christos Rafalides,Michael Mossman,Antonio Hart and David Berkman. 

He began playing timbales at the age of 12 years old, a talent inherited from his father who was a salsa “timbalero” in the 70’s. By the age of 14 he began performing professionally with Puerto Rico leading artist such as the virtouso “sonero” Cano Estremera, Millo Torres y El Tercer Planeta, Plena Libre and “La PVC”. His formal musical education began at the School of Arts in Carolina, Puerto Rico. His first big break came with superstar Victor Manuelle in a stint that lasted for 5 years and provided him with the opportunity to tour all over the world and perform in prestigious venues and events such as Latin Grammy's, Billboard's Awards & Univision Premios Lo Nuestro. 

During his career Mr. Maldonado has been blessed to share the stage or record in studios with international artists and orchestras from many different genres such as: Eddie Palmieri, David Sanchez, Alex Acuña, Wynton Marsalis, Regina Carter, Randy Weston, George Coleman, Justo Almario, Claudia Acuña, Steve Khan, John Benitez Group, Antonio Sanchez, Lionel Loueke, Andy & Jerry Gonzalez, Donald Harrison, Sergio George, Ray Santos, Cheo Feliciano, Andy Montañez, Pleneros de la 21, Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke, Bronx Art Ensemble, La India, Jerry Rivera, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Orq.Mulenze, Bobby Valentin, Ismael Miranda, Cuco Peña, Guasabara Orchestra, The Klezmatics, Sin Banderas, Don Omar, Tego Calderon, Fabio Morgera, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Alex Sipiagin, Will Calhoun, Cristina Pato,Mark Ronson and other great artist. 

As an educator Carlos has been part of the faculties of Queens College, Brooklyn Music School, Bronx Art Ensemble, Multicultural Music Organization and Puerto Rico Music Conservatory. Also as clinician he have given masterclasses at many music conservatories including recently Manhattan School of Music, California State University Chico, Miami Dade College, Duke University, Harlem School of Arts, University of Vermont, Brooklyn College and The Puerto Rico Music Conservatory. 

Since arriving in New York in 2009, he became a band member of the Afro- Rican jazz ensemble of composer/trombonist Papo Vazquez and The Mighty Pirates participating in the band last two album releases Spirit Warrior & Oasis (guest Wynton Marsalis,Regina Carter). Also in recent years has also won acknowledgment for his work as a musical arranger and composer for various local musical groups. Mr.Maldonado is a first call percussionist part of the vibrant NYC music scene he has performed on great music venues such as Blue Note Club, Iridium, Dizzy's Coca Cola Club at Lincoln Center, SOB's, Zinc Bar, Smoke's, BB King's Club, Poisson Rouge, Birdland Jazz Club, Apollo Theather, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Lehman Center & Madison Square Garden. Recently Mr. Maldonado joined the prestigious Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra which maintains a weekly engagement at the famed jazz club Birdland and a residency at Symphony Space. He is also an exclusive artist for JRF Percussion, Meinl Percussion & Meinl Cymbals since 2003.
