Thom started drumming at the age of 7. In 1984, he joined the local drum corps, Granite State Garrison until their final season in 1989. From there, Thom went on to march with the Spartans of Nashua, NH, 1990-1994. In 1995, Thom moved to Boston, MA where he joined the Boston Crusaders and aged out.

Thom has had the privilege of working with such groups as Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps, San Francisco Renegades Drum & Bugle Corps, Emerald Regime H.S. Marching Band, Salem Blue Devils H.S. Marching Band, Plymouth North & South H.S. Marching Band, and Reading Memorial H.S.

Thom has worked for Templeton HS in Templeton, CA as the percussion instructor and arranger since 2010. He also plays percussion and writes for the group "Four Beards", a percussion ensemble from Grover Beach, CA. Thom also writes and arranges for "Chameleon Percussion" based in San Luis Obispo county.
