Award-winning percussionist, educator, and composer, Trent Shuey (b. 1983) has walked to the beat of “A different drummer... [he is] the man for all styles” – The Hermiston Herald (2000). Trent maintains an active career as an orchestral and jazz musician. He has been a timpani concerto soloist with the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra, recipient of the Edgard Varese Percussion Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has performed numerous solo percussion recitals around the country.
 
As a versatile percussionist, Trent has performed with orchestras, big bands, and chamber ensembles. He has held principal percussion and timpani positions with the Tahoe Symphony, Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra, and Inland Northwest Symphony. He has performed with many other professional ensembles including the Oregon East Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfonia da Camera. He can be heard on recordings with the Dakota Brown Band, the 2010 University of Nevada, Reno Jazz Festival CD, and an upcoming release under Bridge Records with the Illinois Modern Ensemble.
 
Trent’s passion for teaching has been realized in high school and college settings. Trent is currently Assistant Director of Bands and Instructor of Percussion at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Trent has served as Adjunct Faculty and Director of Percussion Studies at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon, in addition to Graduate Teaching Assistant for the athletic band programs at the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has taught several high school marching percussion programs throughout the West coast. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance with a minor in Music Education from Eastern Oregon University, a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance with a minor in Jazz Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno where he was Graduate Teaching Assistant for the percussion department and athletic bands. Trent is currently in the research stages of his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
 
Trent was born in North Hollywood, California, the son of an artist and chess master; he began playing the violin in 1994 in Reno, Nevada. He picked up his first drumsticks one year later. After relocating to Oregon, he quickly gained recognition as a percussionist and realized his true passion for music and teaching.
